HOPE FOR THE HOMELESS

Hope to the Homeless is the outreach of local people in Cork (Led by Gillian Horgan) who want to give hope to the homeless on the streets of Cork.

It’s a cold winter’s night in Cork and Barry is getting himself ready for bed, but Barry’s bed is not just any bed, Barry’s bed is a sleeping bag in the doorway of an office block. He’ll find it hard to sleep tonight as it’s due to freeze but other nights he’s kept awake by the hunger pains in his stomach, by the constant worry of where he’s going to sleep, where he’s going to get his next meal, sometimes he doesn’t feel safe so he moves around looking to find a safe place to lay his weary head. He lowers his head when he passes people, the dignity has long left his body, he is a normal kind person down on his luck finding life difficult.

Hope for the Homeless

Our Vision is to take people into hope whereby they are living a fulfilled, purposeful and content life.

If we can bring some sense of hope, some expression of love and encourage faith into the hearts of those living on our streets them we have made a difference.

At Hope for the Homeless we strive to reach out to people finding themselves homeless for any reason. It is our mission to provide support, food, clothing, toiletries, a kind listening ear, and understanding.

Hope for the Homeless is reaching out to the homeless community in Cork City:

- every second Friday night, outside Brown Thomas and in the streets of Cork to give any help we can.

- Hope Café is opened every Saturday in The Haven, Bachelors Quay, where we provide a hot meal, clothing, sleeping bags, shelter and support for those who really need it.

- We also try to place one person each weekend in a B&B to have a comfortable and warm night.

- Our Hope 12 steps Recovery program is available every Tuesday from 12 to 2pm in The Haven, Bachelors Quay for anyone trying to overcome life’s hurt, hang ups and habits of drug and alcohol.

We then help anyone to access addiction and rehab centre by providing financial and emotional support. We regularly do follow up work with people we’ve met by visiting in prison if needed, accompanying in court assisting with Housing application, help with setting up into a new house/shared room, giving personal references.

The organisation is fully run by volunteers of all backgrounds who received induction and trainings such as First Aid, Peaceful Intervention, HACCP…

In the short term, we still have needs for a van and our own warehouse close to the city. Our long term vision is to have our own building from where we can be always available to people in need.
